The music of Martin Joseph can be very profound and at the same time, maybe because he is fan of Monk, it never lacks humor.

Martin Joseph, pianist and British composer lived in Lima for 3 years.   During that time I had the pleasure of meeting him and play with him as a duet.  Martin Joseph is a Jazz musician coming from the aesthetics of Free Jazz, meaning his is a complete improviser. Free Jazz is a genre born in the United States in early 60’s as means to break down Jazz orthodoxy.

Free Jazz emerges as a way to come back to the sense of collectiveness. The need of actively listening makes the music be, freshly and naturally.  Many say that music is for musicians, but it is also true that Free Jazz -especially in Europe- has an increasingly fan base and there are more international festivals that cultivate this genre.

The methodology we used, if it is valid to use this term within this language, was to agree only in the length of each song, anything else was determined randomly.  To play with swing is what differences the Jazz player from others.  Is this the only thing that cannot be missed?  The music of Martin Joseph can be very profound and at the same time, maybe because he is fan of Monk, it never lacks humor.  His knowledge or Jazz history and all the esthetics processes that the piano has gone throughout this adventure are truly remarkable.   I still remember the moment I met him for the first time.  Someone knocked the door of my place in Chorrillos. I opened the door and there it was this man looking kindly at me, that said: “I am Martin Joseph, professional free jazz pianist, are you the percussionist?
